Navigating Change - Redundancy, Realignments, Restructures, Resistance & Reform in healthcare today

The “R” Words Shaping Healthcare Careers

Navigating the Storm: The “R” Words Shaping Healthcare Careers

Redundancy. Realignments. Restructures. Resistance. Reform. If you work in healthcare leadership, you have probably encountered at least one of these recently.

Each “R” word signals change. Some are chosen, others are forced. And all of them come with emotional weight: uncertainty, stress, sometimes relief, and often a deep questioning of “what’s next for me?”

Having stood at the frontline of these shifts, both leading change and navigating it myself, I know how unsettling it can be. A role you have poured years into can suddenly look very different or disappear altogether. For leaders, the stakes feel even higher: teams are watching, patients are depending on you, and yet you are also trying to process your own uncertainty.

This month, I want to explore these “R” words and what they mean for healthcare leaders.

Redundancy

Perhaps the most confronting of all. Redundancy cuts deep. It can shake confidence, identity, and security. I have seen highly capable leaders suddenly questioning their worth after one email or meeting.

I have been there too. Redundancy was part of my own turning point, pushing me to pause, reflect, and ultimately shift from my corporate career into coaching. At the time, it felt like the ground had been pulled away. But looking back, it created the space for a more aligned path, one where I could combine my healthcare leadership experience with my passion for supporting other leaders.

If you would like to hear more of that journey, I recently shared my story on a podcast. You can listen here: Podcast

Reflection question: If your role has ended, what possibilities could now be opening that were not visible before?

Realignments

Realignments often start with good intentions such as streamlining processes, shifting resources, or improving patient outcomes. But for the humans involved, they usually trigger anxiety. Realignment can sound like “strategy,” but it often feels like disruption.

Tip for leaders: Communicate often, even when you do not have all the answers. Silence breeds fear.

Tip for individuals: Stay informed and focus on what you can influence such as your skills, your network, and your wellbeing.

Restructures

A restructure can mean opportunities for some but loss for others. Roles shift, departments merge, and long-standing teams may be broken apart. The uncertainty can unsettle even the most experienced leaders.

Reflection question: What anchors can you hold on to when structures shift around you?

Resistance

Some respond to change with resistance, holding tightly to the familiar. Others choose to step away before fully exploring their options. Both are normal human responses, but neither guarantees stability or growth.

Tip: Before you resist or walk away, pause. Ask yourself: is this decision fear-driven, or is it values-driven? The answer matters.

Reform

The bigger picture. Healthcare is constantly reforming. New models of care, new funding structures, new technologies. These reforms are rarely smooth, but they are not going away. The challenge for leaders is to stay adaptive while staying grounded in their values.

Leadership takeaway: Reform is not something you wait out. It is something you navigate with clarity, resilience, and compassion for yourself and others.

What This Means for You

If you are facing one of these “R” words right now, whether redundancy, realignment, restructure, resistance, or reform, I want you to know you are not alone. Many of the leaders I work with are in this exact space: uncertain, but also standing at the threshold of possibility.

The truth is, you can navigate these changes without losing yourself. With the right support, reflection, and strategy, these moments of disruption can become stepping stones.

Your Next Step If you are navigating change or know it is on the horizon, now is the time to invest in yourself. Book a call with me here and let’s talk about how to move from resistance to resilience, and from redundancy to reinvention.
